Shutter Mode
What is shutter priority?
Not used as much as Aperture Priority, shutter priority will keep the shutter open for a predetermined amount of time and attempt to change the Aperture accordingly to meet your preselected exposure levels. Shutter priority is useful for times when you want to catch something in motion and blur other parts of the photo. Have a look at the photo below. By moving the camera on a tripod from left to right, and by a lot of trial and error, you can actually get the moving part of the photo perfectly clear, yet the rest experiencing motion blur. This can add a lot of energy to your photo and give the perception of motion.
Some applications are taking photos of cars, birds, or anything moving linearly. Some people also talk of perfect shutter speeds for taking pictures of waterfalls or other fluid based subject matter to give the balance between a cloudy sheen and clarity.
