Brightness and Contrast
Changing the brightness and contrast is one of the most basic image editing functions. It is really important when you increase the contrast on an image that you do not lose colour information by accident. This is typical for those who over contrast their photos. There are a variety of tricks which enable you to only contrast certain areas of your selected photo.
Below is an example of a photo in which I have adjusted the brightness and contrast. Notice how the original photo seems a little flat. There are no major bright or dark spots however which means that we can safely increase the contrast without losing definition in the light or dark areas of the picture. By selecting areas using a feathered area selection tool in Photoshop I can also increase the contrast of selected areas of the photo.
Other Tweaks
In addition to brightness and contrast adjustment, I also adjusted the colour by increasing the yellow and red channel a little and boosting the yellow and red saturation a little to bring out the colours in the bark a little. Finally I added a soft vignette to the picture adding more weight to the upper section of the vignette.
